Visual Representation of Geospatial Metadata in the Process of Selecting Datasets

Usability and usefulness of geospatial metadata are important success factors in spatial data infrastructures. However, current metadata services concentrate on discovery of geographic datasets and largely ignore users needs to evaluate and compare datasets in order to select suitable data for intended uses. This paper reports a user study in a geospatial metadata environment that combined different representations forms of metadata taking into account both the multivariate and spatial characteristics of geospatial metadata. The metadata used in the study follow closely the definitions of ISO 19115:2003. The user study was conducted with professional users of geographic data. The results suggest the need for different representations of geospatial metadata, and especially the usefulness of a parallel coordinate plot in the comparison of datasets, the importance of maps (providing visual samples of datasets) in gaining insight of spatial resolution, and the necessity of textual metadata in checking the details of data contents.
